“I know of no pleasure deeper than that which comes from contemplating the natural world and trying to understand it.”
Sir David Attenborough, ‘Life on Air‘
Sir David was awarded the Livingstone Medal in 1989 and the Scottish Geographical Medal in 2011. He is a Fellow of the RSGS.
I love this extract from GeogScot (forerunner of The Geographer) in June 1990: “Sir David had hoped to be present at our honours ceremony in October 1989 but had been prevented from attending at the last moment when, earlier than expected, the optimum conditions for filming migrating moose in Alaska required him to be there.”
Such passion and dedication – he is one of my all-time heroes. If you have a chance to read his autobiography, ‘Life on Air‘, I can totally recommend it.

Nice quotes, both of them. 🙂 I agree with you about his autobiography, a wonderful read.

Incidentally, I like your new widget ‘I’m currently reading….’ I might pinch that idea, if you don’t mind.

Thank you! Please do – it took a bit of trial and error to get the image the right size but I found that 100 W x 150 H works fine. Guess it depends on your theme, though! 🙂

Yes – so entertaining and interesting. There is no hidden ego – he just tells the stories honestly and with such enthusiasm.

This man has brought so much of the world into our homes, it’s hard to define what he’s given us. And he does it so well! Another book added to my list. 🙂

I couldn’t agree more, Pat. I have greatly enjoyed his latest series, on the Great Barrier Reef. He still has the same youthful enthusiasm that he’s always had.

So glad you mentioned that! I don’t have TV, so I don’t know about these things till someone tells me. Found it on YouTube. 🙂

This man is my hero, and the single biggest reason that I paint. Life in the Freezer and Planet Earth – From Pole to Pole – some of the most heart-wrenching moments of TV I’ve ever watched.

My hero too, and an inspiration to us all. It is a pleasure to read his books, and it feels as if the whole country stops to watch his latest programmes. I took a look at your blog – lovely work, and I like ‘Fleeting’ especially. Thanks for your comment!
